- Who are your clients?
A: Coaching looks at where the client is in their life now and what the client is willing to do to get to where they want to be in the future. The coaching relationship is a collaborative and thought-provoking one that supports a client’s ability to learn, make desired changes, solve problems, and achieve goals.
Q: How is coaching different from consulting, teaching or therapy?
A: Consultants provide subject matter expertise or designs solutions for clients. A coach may provide ideas, suggestions or expertise, but the coach does not tell the client what to do. The client is ultimately responsible for choosing their path forward and solving their own problems.
Teachers impart specific knowledge and direct learning for their students. A coach, however, facilitates a client’s learning by providing accountability, feedback and helpful resources. The client is responsible for deciding what he or she needs to learn.
Therapists work with clients to analyze past events, address emotional issues and facilitate healing. In the coaching model, clients are viewed as fully creative, resourceful and whole. Using this approach, a coach helps clients to make changes in their lives by observing present conditions, visualizing future goals and determining action steps.
Q: What are the benefits of working with a coach?
A: Benefits of coaching include:
- Accountability. Meeting with your coach once a week, talking about what you’ve done so far and what’s next keeps the focus and the momentum. This approach is like a catapult; you will keep making progress and achieve more in less time than you ever thought would be possible.
- Championing. Sometimes we lose sight of how big we can live our lives. Your coach is there to remind you of your greatness when you feel small and to help you see what you can achieve in your life.
- Partnership. Regular coaching sessions provide a supportive and dedicated partnership totally focused on what you truly want in your life and what needs to happen to create it.
- Perspective. See your progress and challenges from a different perspective. Simply hearing your problem restated by another person can give you insight that will help you find a solution.
Q: What kind of results can I expect from coaching?
A: Results typically experienced include:
- Clarity on priorities and values
- Better goal setting
- More work / life balance
- Lower stress levels
- Increased confidence
- Improved quality of life
- Enhanced communication skills
